GuardDog

It might be an idea to find space in the next release for Guarddog for firewall management, it is by far the simplest firewall manager and although KDE it runs well under Gnome.

Firestarter may be an alternative for the GNOME edition.

Mint Linux Software Raid Suggestion

A nice option sadly not yet incorporated into Ubuntu or Mint is support for software RAID with the ability to combine IDE & SATA disks in a Raid. Many mobo's sold just before the advent of dual core CPU's in home PC's have teh abiliy to support onboard software driver raid or with the help of an add in card can do this by using PCI/PCI-E slots.

Other than Gentoo, Fedora or RHEL binary clones this is poorly provided for thru the use of an intuitive open source GUI. I've tried the MD and DMRAID tools at the command line and played around with GRUB's setup (GRUB does not officially support software raid but can be fooled into working) and its still a matter of trial and error to get this to be a success.

This is a suggestion and, perhaps, something that can gather steam in Mint and Ubuntu or influence the Debian base for the benefits of avid open source Linux home users. Many thanks to the Mint team for neat distro.

New Sound Theme

The sound theme for linux mint seems to be much less polished than the other (graphical/visual) elements of the linux mint theme. It would certainly add much 'elegance' if the sound theme were to be revamped.

Sustain Xfce version

Keep the xfce vesion going for old & minimal machines, or anyone who wants Mint excellence with very low resource use

Sun Java

Include Sun Java (now GPL).

Project Management

  • Open Workbench - runs under wine I think, though it would be better to develop a native GNU/Linux version.

Exaile

Exaile seems to be mature enough to replace Amarok in the GNOME edition. It even has an equalizer if the latest gstreamer library is installed (which is available in Gutsy).

Mint Menu

The regular gnome menu has a Places->Bookmarks this should be added to mint menu , these are folders you can add on the left hand side of any folder you open in gnome which would be really good to have kind of like a "favorite folders" tab thats the only thing i can say is missing from mint menu.

Language metafiles and Gnome language packs

To keep the Linux Mint install-cd small, the language metapackages and GNOME language packs should not be included. Nevertheless, there should be an option for post-install the local packages through MintAssistant or mintDesktop.

This would be great for linux newbees in non-english countries.

Software Developer Friendly

What good is a great O/S with no programs to run? In the long run, having a massive group of programmers targeting your O/S creates more useful programs. Make it easy for C++ and Java programmers to install Eclipse, KDE, wxWidgets, etc. and have a large set of sample source code projects that are ready to build and run.
