Setting up nvidia with twinview (Desktop Spanning with 3D Acceleration)

Objective: to have a desktop span two monitors Prerequisites: Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna or many other Ubuntu Gusty derivatives

Skip the terminal, this time its the GUI

What used to be a matter of running...

"sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg && sudo nvidia-xconfig -twinview

... has now (Ubuntu Gusty +) been replaced by a clicking process.



1) Download restricted drivers & enable them

  • Click Daryna:Administration:Restricted Drivers


2) Install new nvidia drivers with Envy

  • Click Daryna:SystemTools:Envy
  • Install, downloading all dependencies


3) Set Video Driver & Monitor Frequencies

  • Click Daryna : Administration : Screens and Graphics

  • Click the Graphics Card tab and select your driver to be nvidia,
  • Click the Screen tab and fill out your monitors information appropriately
  • I setup both Screen1 & Screen2 with model/make information;
  • I also set the second monitor to be disabled


4) Restart x server by logging out, then CTRL-ALT-Backspace

  • If all is well, you aren't set in recovery mode


5) Set Twinview Settings

  • Click Daryna:System Tools:NVIDIA Settingsgs
  • Click "X Server Display Configuration"; its the second on the left column
  • Arrange the Blue Rectangles approparatly, and click apply
  • Hint: You might need to click the Configure Button to enable Twinview
  • Hint: try setting all the resolutions you see during this process to 1024x768

Remember to Click Apply
