Introduction

Welcome to the Linux Mint Newsletter. Here is what happened last week.

News

Linux Mint

  • A calm week for Linux Mint
  • We do have IRC. Clem states in a blog post [1] that the IRC no longer is dedicated to support - that's better taken care of in the forum. Well - husse is almost never active on the IRC, so that's true....
  • Upstream improvements will make Mint 5, Elyssa, better [2]

Linux and other Distributions

  • Fujitsu Siemens lifebook are Novell YES certified [3] and Lenovo Thinkpad also to have SUSE Linux
  • HP also starts selling SUSE computers [4]
  • Obviously Novell (= SUSE) is seen as a better alternative for the enterprise market.

IT & Open Source

  • PlayOnLinux makes gaming easier [5]
  • Rfid circuits (used in public transit proof-of-payment systems and the like) have been hacked [6]
  • This year sees another hacking competition - Windows - Mac - Linux [7]
  • The British High Court grants software patent [8]
  • Not at all Linux but Vista SP1 cannot be used on some popular chipsets like Intel 945 [9]

Editor's comments

It's not easy to keep track of the rapid development in the computer world.
If you feel something is left out in the newsletter send a PM to husse in the forum and it may be included in the next edition
