Mint won't work on Inpiron 1420n - solved!

Post by Sayhar »

Howdy. I was having trouble installing Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and Slackware when I tried to reach out further for an alternative that actually works.

I saw the reviews of Mint and I fell in love.

However, the install of Cassandra utterly fails to work.

I get this error: /bin/sh: Can't access tty; Job control turned off

What do I do? The Ubuntu forums suggest the alternate install cd, which I don't think Mint has, plus the alternative install for ubuntu still had tons of problems (not recognizing broadband, graphics failing)

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for responding!

I checked out the md5 hash and burned as slow as possible.

I have:
Inspiron 1420, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TL LCD for Inspiron 1420
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 Inspiron 1420
160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

I checked the troubleshooting guide, too. It isn't working for me. I tried the part where it says:
When the live CD starts up press F6 and delete the "quiet splash --" ending and type in "break=bottom", then boot with this. If you end up in a "busy box" or so, reboot and type in "break=top" instead.
And I still get a message saying:
BusyBox c.1.1.3 ...

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

Link on how to boot Mint 3.0 LiveCD for Dell Inspiron 1720

Post by awong »

I had the same problems with my new Dell Inspiron. Try this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... piron+1720

It worked for my Inspiron 1720. I'm currently posting using the Mint 3.0 LiveCD. :D

If I get brave I may try to install later.

Possibly "santa rosa" (Mobile 965 Express) is to new so the kernel and/or chipset modules can't handle it. Unfortunately there are others with this chipset and problems

I had the same problem on a brand new HP Pavilion.

Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 seems to work well - hopefully we'll see a Gutsy-based version of Mint soon.

After I posted about the support for 965 I've read that there is built in support for it in newer kernels, mainly the video, but possibly the mobo part as well.
Not that it helps but Vista is having problems with this one too :)

I can also confirm that the Gutsy Tribe 5 Live CD boots up on the Dell Inspiron 1720 Notebook.
