changing permissions

Post by dungbeetle »

Hi Guys, I now have a working install of Mint 4.0 and am trying to access my files which I have copied from the home partition of my previous distro. I copied my music, pictures, and some other stuff into my mint /home partition, but they all appeared with padlocks on and permission is set to root. I tried changing permission for the music directory but the contents all still belong to root. I tried using chown but cant fathom it from the man pages.

Could someone please let me know a simple way how I can change permission for these directories and all their contents. I have been using linux for over a year now and am totally committed to it, but I just cannot get my head around these permissions, no matter how much I read or experiment. It just doesnt make any sense to me, preventing me, the only user, from accessing my own files, unless I run as root of course! I just do not understand why moving a set of files from the home partition of my previous distro to my home partition in mint should suddenly make them inaccessible.
Help please!

You didn't tell us what cp command you used (Code: cp -a -v -u ... etc), so maybe you didn't use the right parameters with the cp command. The Wiki has more info:

dungbeetle, welcome to the Mint forums.

Open your Mint menu > applications > accessories > krusader > tools > start root mode krusader > sign in using your administrator password >

then dig your way into the directory you want to change permission, right click that directory, choose the permission tab, there you can change the permission to your user name, before you exit, check the box at the bottom to change permission also on all subdirectories and files.

I hope this helps,
cheers,
BakUp

I think Krusader is installed by default.....

If not use package manager Synaptic.

Thanks for the welcome BakUp. I installed krusader. Never used it before and it seemed very complicated, but what a tool! It worked a treat and now I seem to be finding my way around it, I think it will get a lot of use.
Thanks again.

Thanks from me also about the Krusader info BakUp. I've been using Linux full on for two years, and i still detest having to do the whole cli thing for such a simple task. :)

Isn't Krusader a KDE app though? It's not installed on my system (Just installing it now) but i'm surprised that you can't do this with Nautilus or Thunar or whatever FM you use. Also, although i have installed Krusader, and it seems to work fine, i don't have the ability to access (from the Menu) the "Start Krusader in Root Mode" item..... is there something i'm missing? :)

Anyway, not a gripe, but a "Thank you" for making the whole Mint Experience a little easier. :)

Well, it was developed as an KDE apt, but as with most KDE apts, it works fine also in Gnome.

Ok, open Krusader, then go to tools, under tools you should see, "start root mode krusader"..............it should be there.

It works fine for sure, but i always thought that it wasn't a good idea (purely from a Dependency Loading point of view) to mix Gnome & KDE, and even GTK for that matter. I've always tried to use GTK apps if poss (in Xubuntu) and steer clear of Gnome & KDE deps. Does this not matter as much as i thought it did then?

Yep, got it..... thanks for that. That should help a great deal. :)
