DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
The hard disk is beginning to fill up so I made a couple of DVD disks
They play in the DVD player but Mint, WinXP and Vista reports the disks as blank disks
Just installed VLC - no change
Any one with some experience on this?

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
Thanks for reply
No I had not - this post is a "shot in the dark" while I investigate further
Very difficult to find anything though and the Samsung support page sucks....

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
This seems to happen with some -RW discs. In addition, sometimes they won't permit burning via a PC unless they've been reinitialised in a dvd recorder. RWs are very unpredictable but I've no idea why.

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
I had been unable to playback DVD's made with a phillips DVD/video recorder, but I came across this post "http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... ing#p61518" and had a go at playing the DVD as sudo.
So then I tried "sudo totem"... and the sudo'd totem could play the disk!
Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
I have a Samsung DVD Recorder and I hit the same problem as you. The DVDs are recorded with the wrong permissions so Mint can't see the disks. If you run your DVD player as sudo everything works. I have a shortcut on my desktop that executes the following script:
#! /bin/bash
# script to launch the dvd player
echo "yourpasswordgoesherbetweenthequotes" | sudo totem
P M Gant

How did you burn the disk? What type of disk are you using? What type of files are you burning?
Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
This was long forgotten when it suddenly came to life
It's on one of these combos for TV where you can record on DVD or on a hard disk
The hard disk uses some closed format too - it is not readable in a pc....

What is the file extension? Have you tried ripping the DVD to a video file? Take a look at a package called Ogmrip. It is in the repo's.Husse wrote:This was long forgotten when it suddenly came to life

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
Seems like a post has disappeared
This is not a PC - it's a standalone DVD recorder with hard disk sitting under the TV
Unfortunately it did not help to run Totem as root
Can't be read in Vista either - maybe some DRM?

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
Most of these DVD recorders have a function called something like finalise disk.
You have to finalise the DVD disc to be able to play in another player.

Re: DVD-video recorded on a Samsung DVD player
It must be somewhere in the menu system I guess
Maybe Disc Menu or something like that?
